Ghana has designated every Wednesday as ‘Fugu Day’ to promote the country’s traditional outfit, the fugu, following an online debate with Zambians.
The fugu, a northern Ghanaian top made from hand-woven cotton fabric, was mocked by some Zambians when President John Dramani Mahama wore it during a state visit.
Ghana’s Tourism Minister, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, announced the initiative, citing the fugu’s cultural significance and potential economic benefits for local weavers and artisans.
Many Ghanaians have heeded the call, wearing the outfit on Wednesdays.
The move has sparked a cultural movement, with Ghanaians showcasing their fugus on social media.
Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has offered to order fugus from Ghana, while President Mahama suggested exporting the outfit in bulk.
