The US House of Representatives has introduced a bill seeking to designate Fulani ethnic militias as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO) over alleged “religious violence” in Nigeria.
The Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026, sponsored by Rep. Riley Moore and co-sponsored by Rep.
Chris Smith, calls for the US Secretary of State to consider designating Fulani militias as terrorists and submit annual reports to Congress on efforts to address Christian persecution in Nigeria.
The bill references destruction of churches, kidnappings, and attacks on villages, estimating 50,000-125,000 Christians killed between 2009-2025.
Moore, who visited Nigeria as part of an investigation initiated by President Donald Trump, stated the bill demonstrates US support for persecuted Christians.
The legislation also urges a review of US assistance to Nigeria to ensure it doesn’t enable religious persecution.
