Security agents allegedly tried to arrest former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, upon his return from Cairo, Egypt.

El-Rufai’s media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, claimed that operatives approached him without a formal invitation, and he refused to accompany them.

The agents then seized his international passport from an aide, prompting El-Rufai’s counsel, Ubong Akpan, to condemn the act as a “flagrant violation of constitutional rights” and “executive overreach”.

Akpan stated that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had delivered an invitation to El-Rufai’s residence in December 2025, and his team had assured the agency of compliance, scheduling a voluntary appearance for February 16, 2026.

Despite this, the attempted arrest proceeded, citing multiple constitutional infringements.
