A strike by workers at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is causing flight delays, with Kenya Airways reporting air traffic control delays affecting departures and arrivals.
The labour dispute is over worker grievances, including failure to conclude a collective bargaining agreement and concerns over the planned leasing of the airport, which workers fear could lead to job.
The union had issued a seven-day strike notice last week, but the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority approached courts to try to block it, arguing that the strike would disrupt travel and cause economic losses.
Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is a major air transport hub in Africa, and the strike is likely to impact travel plans, with passengers facing delays and possible cancellations.
The aviation workers’ union has stated that they are committed to negotiating with the government to address their concerns, but are prepared to take further action if necessary.
As the standoff continues, travelers are advised to check with their airlines for updates on flight schedules and plan accordingly.
