The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed the arrival of 100 US military personnel and equipment in Nigeria, marking a significant step in the country’s fight against terrorism.
The deployment follows a recent security agreement between Nigeria and the US, aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to tackle terrorist threats.
According to Defence spokesman Samaila Uba, the US personnel are technical specialists serving in an advisory and training capacity, and will work closely with Nigerian troops to enhance their ability to identify and neutralize extremist groups.
The collaboration will focus on capacity building, professional military education, intelligence sharing, logistics support, and strategic dialogue, with all engagements done with full respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty.
The move comes amid mounting pressure from US President Donald Trump, who has criticized Nigeria’s government for its handling of Islamist militant attacks.
However, the Nigerian government has rejected Trump’s claims, insisting that violence affects people of all faiths.
