The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called for inclusive governance, effective policy implementation and stronger national unity as Christians in Nigeria and around the world mark Ash Wednesday.

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja and signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association said the Lenten season offers a moment for sober reflection on the state of the nation and the responsibilities of both leaders and citizens in shaping Nigeria’s future.

CAN noted that Nigeria is grappling with significant socio-economic difficulties, including rising living costs, unemployment and persistent security challenges affecting many communities.

According to the statement, many households are struggling under economic pressure, while insecurity in parts of the country continues to test public confidence.

The association stressed that addressing these concerns requires practical solutions, accountable leadership and a shared national commitment to lasting reforms.

CAN urged political leaders at all levels to go beyond drafting policies and focus on effective implementation that delivers tangible benefits to citizens. It observed that while numerous policies exist, the greater challenge lies in ensuring they are executed transparently, fairly and in ways that provide real relief to Nigerians.

The Christian body also emphasised the importance of inclusiveness in governance, calling on leaders to recognise Nigeria’s diversity and ensure government programmes reach households, youths and vulnerable communities.

Addressing citizens, CAN cautioned against division, violence and the spread of misinformation, urging Nigerians to uphold unity despite differences in faith, ethnicity and culture. It added that cooperation among religious groups and responsible civic conduct remain essential for peace and national stability.

The association further encouraged young people to channel their energy into innovation, productivity and constructive engagement in nation-building.

“As we mark this Ash Wednesday, may it renew our collective commitment to justice, compassion and responsible citizenship,” the statement said, adding that Nigeria’s progress depends on the combined efforts of leaders and the populace.
