A Tunisian court has sentenced lawmaker Ahmed Saidani to 8 months in prison for social media posts mocking President Kais Saied.
Saidani called Saied “supreme commander of sanitation” after his visits to flood-hit areas, sparking outrage.
The prosecution cited a telecoms law against “harming others via social media”, punishable by up to 2 years in prison.
Human rights groups criticize Saied’s crackdown on dissent since suspending parliament in 2021.
Saidani, once a Saied supporter, had turned critic, accusing him of monopolizing power.
