The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has declared its readiness to provide adequate security for the ongoing Area Council elections in the nation’s capital.

Speaking to Channels Television on Saturday, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, said the command had deployed officers in large numbers across polling units to ensure a peaceful exercise.

According to him, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, approved additional deployments from the Force Headquarters, including another Commissioner of Police, to strengthen monitoring and operational support.

“Deployments have commenced and virtually concluded. Every polling unit, at this point, should have officers unless they are slightly delayed,” Dantawaye said, noting that electoral materials had begun arriving at polling units from Registration Area Centres (RACs).

He explained that early deployment was aimed at ensuring timely accreditation and voting, as well as the smooth conclusion of the electoral process.

“The FCT Police Command is committed. We are very ready, and monitoring has commenced,” he added.

The elections are being conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) across the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory.

More than 1.5 million residents who have collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) are expected to participate in the polls to elect chairmen and councillors at the grassroots level.
