A Tunisian court has ordered the release of Ahmed Souab, a prominent lawyer and fierce critic of President Kais Saied, after he served a five-year jail term.
Souab was sentenced in October 2025 for “forming a terrorist organization” and “spreading false information” related to his criticism of the government’s handling of a high-profile trial.
Souab’s arrest and detention sparked widespread condemnation from human rights groups, who deemed it a politically motivated move to silence dissent.
He had been a vocal critic of President Saied’s administration, particularly regarding judicial independence and the rule of law.
Souab’s release comes after months of international pressure and advocacy for his freedom.
His case highlighted concerns about Tunisia’s human rights record and the erosion of judicial independence under President Saied’s rule.
