Former presidential candidate Peter Obi and other African Democratic Congress (ADC) leaders were attacked by armed thugs in Benin City, Edo State.
The incident occurred during the formal defection of former Labour Party governorship candidate Olumide Akpata into the ADC.
According to witnesses, the attackers were angered by the unexpectedly large crowd that gathered at the ADC secretariat despite minimal publicity ahead of Obi’s visit.
The attackers, allegedly sponsored by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), opened fire around the premises, destroying vehicles and causing panic among residents.
The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, described the incident as a targeted attack against opposition figures, stating that “democracy is in danger”.
