An inquest into the death of Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi Esege, will begin on April 14, 2026.
The toddler died on January 7, 2026, at Euracare Hospital in Lagos, where he was taken for pre-flight medical investigations before being transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Adichie and her family have accused Euracare Hospital of negligence, alleging that medics denied Nkanu oxygen and administered excessive sedation, leading to a cardiac arrest.
The hospital has denied wrongdoing, stating that its care met international standards.
The court will hear evidence from medical experts and hospital representatives to determine the circumstances and cause of Nkanu’s death.
Adichie’s legal team has submitted that Nkanu was initially admitted to Atlantis Hospital with a worsening but mild illness.
