A United Nations flight has landed at Khartoum International Airport, marking the first humanitarian flight to the Sudanese capital since the outbreak of the country’s nearly three-year conflict, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator for Sudan, Denise Brown, confirmed on Thursday.

Brown described the development as “a big deal” for aid workers trying to reach millions of people in need across the war-torn nation.

“I’d like to reiterate how pleased I am to have taken the first United Nations Humanitarian Air Service flight to Khartoum in three years, so it’s a big deal for the humanitarian community,” Brown said after stepping off the aircraft.

The flight is expected to facilitate the delivery of much-needed assistance and support efforts to provide humanitarian aid to vulnerable populations affected by the ongoing conflict.
