Football in Congo is facing a major crisis after serious allegations were leveled against Jean Guy Blaise Mayolas, the president of the Congolese Football Federation. He is accused of misappropriating over $1 million in FIFA development funds.

An investigation by The Guardian revealed that a network of shell companies may have been used to divert money meant for football infrastructure and development programs, raising serious concerns about governance and financial transparency within the federation.

The situation escalated on February 27 when Congo’s Ministry of Sports filed a formal complaint, prompting law enforcement action. The gendarmerie has since arrested the federation’s secretary general, Badji Mombo, and treasurer, Mr. Kanda, as part of a broader investigation into the management of international funds.
With top officials now under scrutiny, the federation’s leadership and credibility face serious uncertainty. The case could lead to sanctions from both national authorities and FIFA, which maintains strict rules on the use of development grants.
