Belgium has detained three individuals suspected of involvement in crimes against humanity and war crimes linked to Cameroon’s separatist conflict.
The suspects, believed to be leaders of the Ambazonia Defence Forces (ADF), were arrested in coordinated searches in Antwerp and Londerzeel.
Prosecutors allege that funds were raised in Belgium to support the armed struggle and purchase arms and ammunition, with instructions for attacks given from the country.
The ADF is fighting for independence of Cameroon’s English-speaking regions, with the conflict resulting in over 6,500 deaths and 490,000 displaced since 2017. Human rights groups accuse both rebels and government forces of widespread abuses.
The arrests follow similar investigations in Norway and the US, highlighting international scrutiny of the conflict.
