Abu Umoru, the Minority Leader of the Benue State House of Assembly, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing support for Governor Hyacinth Alia’s “Transformational Agenda”.
This move gives the APC a commanding majority of 28 members in the 32-seat assembly, leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with only 4 members.
Umoru, who represents the Apa/Agatu state constituency, was immediately named Deputy Majority Leader after switching parties.
He stated that his decision was strategic, aiming to unite with Governor Alia’s administration to bring development to his constituents.
This defection is another significant blow to the PDP in Benue State, which has seen key stakeholders migrate to the APC since the 2023 general elections.
Analysts suggest the dwindling opposition voices may impact legislative debates in the state.
