Ademola Lookman will face former English rivals when Atlético Madrid host Tottenham Hotspur F.C. in the round of 16 first leg of the UEFA Champions League at the Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday.

The encounter presents a familiar challenge for the Super Eagles forward, who previously played in England with Everton F.C., Leicester City F.C. and Fulham F.C. before revitalising his career after joining Atalanta BC in 2022.

During his time in England, Lookman faced Tottenham four times but recorded no goals, one assist and no victories, managing two draws and two defeats. However, the Nigerian forward has since developed into one of Europe’s most dangerous attackers.
His rise was highlighted by a memorable hat-trick in the 2024 Europa League final, which secured Atalanta’s first major European trophy.
Lookman joined Atletico Madrid in January for €35m and has made an immediate impact under manager Diego Simeone, scoring four goals and providing two assists in his first six starts for the Spanish club.

His latest appearance came on Saturday when he played 53 minutes in Atletico’s 3–2 La Liga victory over Real Sociedad.
Tottenham head into the clash struggling in domestic competitions, having lost five straight matches and sitting just above the relegation zone in the Premier League. Their recent 3–1 defeat to Crystal Palace F.C. extended their winless run in the league.
Despite their domestic struggles, Tottenham have performed strongly in Europe. The team, coached by Igor Tudor, finished fourth in the Champions League league phase with five wins, including victories over Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt.
Atletico Madrid progressed to the round of 16 after defeating Club Brugge KV 7–4 on aggregate in the playoff round.
Lookman will be hoping to help Atletico secure a positive result over the two legs as the Spanish side pursue a place in the Champions League quarter-finals.
