A Tunisian court has sentenced Saadia Mosbah, a prominent migrant rights and anti-racist activist, to eight years in prison.
Mosbah, who has been detained since May 2024, faced charges of money laundering and illicit enrichment.
Her lawyer, Hela Ben Salem, described the verdict as “a major shock” and part of a broader effort to dismantle civil society groups.
The case is seen as part of a wider crackdown on civil society and independent voices in Tunisia, with authorities suspending activities of prominent groups like the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights and the Association of Democratic Women.
Rights groups warn that these measures risk restricting humanitarian efforts and curtailing independent advocacy.
