Romuald Wadagni, Benin’s finance minister and ruling party candidate, has pledged to establish municipal police forces in northern border towns to defend against jihadist groups.
Wadagni emphasized regional cooperation, stating Benin must work with neighbors to address security challenges as insurgents increase attacks on the Niger-Benin-Nigeria borderlands.
The plan aims to train and equip local young people to protect their communities, homes, and families.
Wadagni’s proposal comes amid escalating attacks in the north, including a recent incident that killed 15 soldiers and wounded five.
Benin rarely comments on jihadist violence, but Wadagni’s announcement highlights the growing concern.
President Patrice Talon has pursued economic reforms and boosted tourism, but security issues remain a top challenge.
