FIBA has approved the extension of Musa Kida’s tenure as President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation until October 2026, despite his initial term ending on January 31.
The decision allows the current NBBF board to remain in charge of basketball administration in Nigeria pending fresh elections later this year.

In a statement addressing concerns over governance and the timing of elections, FIBA said it had reviewed submissions from stakeholders and reaffirmed its oversight of the federation, particularly during election periods which have historically been contentious.

FIBA stated that the existing NBBF board will retain its mandate until October 15, 2026. It added that elections must be conducted after the conclusion of the 2026 Women’s Basketball World Cup in September and no later than October 15, with a new board set to assume office the following day.
The global basketball body also directed that no amendments be made to the NBBF statutes before the electoral process is completed, stressing that elections must be conducted in line with current regulations and FIBA’s governing statutes.
