South Africa’s national police commissioner, Fannie Masemola, has been summoned to appear in court on April 21 in connection with a controversial $21m health contract.
The tender was awarded to businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s company, Medicare24 Tshwane District, in 2024 to provide health services to the police.
However, allegations of corruption led to the contract’s cancellation and the charging of a dozen senior police officers ¹.
Masemola, 62, is the third police chief to face a criminal investigation while in office.
He has pledged to cooperate with the lawful processes, according to police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe.
The charges against him are yet to be disclosed, but he is expected to face allegations related to the Public Finance Management Act.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has stated that he will address the matter in accordance with the law, ensuring the police force remains stable and able to fulfill its mandate.
