The Democratic Republic of the Congo have secured qualification for their first FIFA World Cup in 52 years after defeating Jamaica national football team 1–0 in their intercontinental play-off final in Mexico.

The decisive moment came in extra time when Axel Tuanzebe scored in the 100th minute, turning in a corner from Brian Cipenga after the ball deflected off a Jamaican defender.

The goal was briefly reviewed for a possible handball, but it was eventually upheld, sparking celebrations among the Congolese players.

Earlier in the match, striker Cédric Bakambu had two goals ruled out for offside, as both teams struggled to break the deadlock in regulation time.

Jamaica, who were aiming for a second World Cup appearance since 1998, failed to create clear chances in extra time as DR Congo held on for the historic win.

The victory ends decades of waiting for the Leopards, who last appeared at the World Cup in 1974 when the country competed as Zaire.

DR Congo will now compete in the expanded tournament, where they are set to face Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan in the group stage.
