A 500-level Building Technology student of Covenant University, Toluwase Jesutunmise, has died after collapsing during a football training session on campus.
The university disclosed in a statement by its Vice-Chancellor, Timothy Anake, that the incident occurred on Monday, April 6, 2026.

According to the statement, Jesutunmise had been participating in a training session before stepping out to rest after complaining of leg pain and fatigue. Shortly after, his teammates noticed he was gasping for breath and quickly rushed him to the institution’s medical centre.
However, he reportedly stopped breathing before arriving at the emergency unit, which is located close to the playing field.

Despite being brought in without signs of life, medical personnel immediately commenced cardiopulmonary resuscitation using an automated external defibrillator, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was subsequently certified dead, with preliminary indications pointing to an undisclosed heart condition.

The incident sparked reactions among students, with some alleging that there was a lack of adequate emergency response at the medical facility. However, the university management dismissed claims of negligence, insisting that all necessary equipment was available and properly utilised during the response.
The institution expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, describing his death as a painful loss to the university community.
