The African Democratic Congress has confirmed that more than 3,000 delegates are expected to attend its national convention scheduled for April 14 in Abuja, despite challenges in securing preferred venues.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bola Abdullahi, disclosed this in an interview, accusing authorities of frustrating the party’s efforts to use Eagle Square and the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome. He, however, insisted that the convention would go ahead as planned at Rainbow Hotel.
Abdullahi described the situation as an “assault on democracy,” alleging that the party’s requests to use Eagle Square had been ignored, while an earlier arrangement with the stadium management was disrupted due to a scheduled cycling event.

“We are expecting over 3,000 delegates for the ADC national convention. No matter the challenges, the convention will hold,” he said, adding that the party would not be deterred by actions of the APC-led Federal Government.
In a separate statement, the party said its ward and state congresses were conducted peacefully across the country, noting that the exercise reflected its commitment to internal democracy, transparency, and the rule of law. It also congratulated newly elected state executives and chairmen.
The ADC further announced that the inauguration of the new officials would take place on May 12, 2026, or on a later date to be communicated.
As part of preparations for the convention, the party released updated lists of its convention committees and subcommittees. The Central Coordination Committee is chaired by former Cross River State governor Liyel Imoke, with former Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal serving as deputy.
The convention comes amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the party, which began in 2025 following the emergence of a new National Working Committee led by David Mark. The dispute, involving multiple factions and court cases, has raised concerns about the party’s cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Despite the internal wrangling and regulatory challenges involving the Independent National Electoral Commission, the ADC has reaffirmed its resolve to proceed with its convention and strengthen its structure nationwide.
