On Thursday, the State House of Assembly repealed the 2019 State Emirates Council Law, which had established four additional emirates under former governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

Following the repeal, kingmakers, including Madakin Kano Yusuf Nabahani, Makaman Kano Abdullahi Sarki-Ibrahim, and Sarkin Dawaki Mai Tuta, arrived at the Government House to prepare for the selection of a new emir.

Lawal Husseini, the majority leader who introduced the bill for dissolution, stated that Kano currently has no emir.

He explained that the bill abolishes the five new emirates, reverting to a single emirate as established since the Jihad of Shehu Usman Dan Fodio.

“The bill empowers the governor to appoint a new emir after consulting with the kingmakers,” Husseini said. The governor’s assent to the law is awaited.

Meanwhile, media reports suggest that former Emir Lamido Sanusi, deposed under the repealed law, might be reinstated. Sanusi left an event in Port Harcourt amid speculation that he had been summoned to Kano for his reinstatement. Governor Sim Fubara congratulated Sanusi on his potential reinstatement, though it has yet to be formalized.
