South Africa overcame an early scare to secure a nervy four-wicket victory over the Netherlands in the Twenty20 World Cup in Long Island, New York on Saturday.

David Miller played a crucial role, hitting an unbeaten 59 off 51 balls as South Africa chased down the Dutch total of 103 for nine, finishing at 106 for six in 18.5 overs. This win marked South Africa’s second successive victory in Group D, while the Netherlands suffered their first defeat after beating Nepal in Dallas.

Put into bat, the Netherlands struggled early against tall opener Marco Jansen, managing only 35-4 after 10 overs. They increased their run rate toward the end with a 54-run partnership between Sybrand Engelbrecht and Logan van Beek for the seventh wicket. Engelbrecht, South African-born, scored 40 before falling in the last over. Newcomer Ottneil Baartman took three wickets in the final over, finishing with figures of 4-11, while Jansen and Anrich Nortje claimed two wickets each.

The Netherlands struck with the first ball of South Africa’s innings as a mix-up led to Quinton de Kock being run out without facing a ball. This triggered a sudden panic, with Reeza Hendricks bowled and captain Aiden Markram caught down the leg side, leaving South Africa at 3-3. Heinrich Klaasen’s dismissal in the fifth over further troubled the team at 12-4. However, Stubbs and Miller steadied the innings with a 65-run partnership. When Stubbs fell in the 17th over, South Africa still needed 27 runs, but Miller saw his side home.

South Africa will play Bangladesh on Monday, while the Netherlands face Bangladesh on Thursday.
