Senate President Godswill Akpabio has issued a public apology to his colleague, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, following a controversial comment he made during a plenary session.

On Tuesday, Akpabio emphasised on the Senate floor that he would never intentionally insult a woman, clarifying his intentions regarding his previous remark.

The incident in question occurred last Thursday when Akpabio admonished Akpoti-Uduaghan for attempting to speak out of turn, stating, “Senator Natasha, you cannot speak without being asked or invited to speak in the Senate. This is not a nightclub.”

Akpabio revealed that it was his wife who brought the matter to his attention, highlighting his respect for her and his commitment to uplifting women. He addressed the backlash he received, stating his phone had been inundated with insults over the issue.

“I will not intentionally denigrate any woman and I always pray that God will uplift women. Distinguished Senator Natasha, I want to apologise to you,” Akpabio stated.

Acknowledging the social media uproar, Akpabio noted, “The interest shown on social media indicates that we have enemies. I felt I should tender a public apology to you.

I do not mean any harm. People should focus on things that will move this country forward. Social media handlers should practise with decorum. We won’t regulate social media out of anger.”

Additionally, Akpabio denied allegations circulating on social media about his personal life, firmly stating that he is devoted to his wife, whom he finds beautiful and sufficient according to his religious beliefs.
