Salem Bazoum, son of the ousted Niger President Mohamed Bazoum, secured a provisional release on Monday as confirmed by a Niamey military tribunal.

The 22-year-old, previously held with his parents since the coup on July 26, 2023, now awaits justice whenever required.

Meanwhile, his parents remain detained at the presidential residence. Since the overthrow, Niger has been under military rule, distancing itself from European allies and aligning with Mali and Burkina Faso.

The Sahelian nation, like its neighbours, faces persistent insurgency in the Tri-border area.

Economic repercussions, including rising food prices and shortages, have hit the impoverished country.

Niger remains suspended from ECOWAS, with international pressure for Bazoum’s release and return to power, while former officials face arrests and exile.
