Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has called the recent seizure of three Nigerian presidential jets in France a stark embarrassment, highlighting what he describes as a failure of leadership in the country. The jets were seized following a contract dispute between Ogun State and Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment Co. Limited, a Chinese firm.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Obi condemned both the Federal Government and the Ogun State Government, asserting that the incident sheds light on broader issues of poor governance and lack of transparency in Nigeria.

Obi expressed concern that Nigerians were kept in the dark about the acquisition and management of these jets, which he argued are being treated as personal assets rather than public property. He challenged the Federal Government to be transparent and explain how the situation escalated to an international embarrassment.

The Federal Government, in response, stated that it is taking legal and diplomatic actions to overturn the court’s order, claiming that the jets are protected by sovereign immunity. However, Obi insisted that the situation reflects deeper issues of inadequate leadership and called for greater accountability at all levels of government.
