The Central Bank of Nigeria appointed new executive directors to oversee the operations of the deposit money banks just hours after dissolving the boards and managements of Union Bank of Nigeria, Keystone Bank, and Polaris Bank due to purported violations of corporate governance and regulatory noncompliance.

The appointment is effective immediately, according to a statement released on Thursday morning by Sidi Hakama, the acting director of corporate communications.

The announcement states that Union Bank has named Yetunde Oni, the first female CEO of Standard Chartered Bank in Sierra Leone, as its new CEO.

The CEO of Union Bank, Yetunde Oni, takes over from Mudassir Amray, the previous CEO of the bank, bringing with her a 25-year career. 

Oni is a tenacious leader with experience negotiating complicated business decisions. She is recognised for her role in developing talent, managing teams, and coming up with solutions for clients.

Here are  10 things to know about new Union Bank CEO Yetunde Oni

1. She bagged her first degree in Economics from the University of Ibadan in 1991.

2. She underwent Executive Training at Oxford University in 2016.

3. She obtained an MBA in Business Administration from Bangor University in 2020..

4. Oni started her banking journey with the Prime Merchant Bank Treasury & Money Markets Group from where she joined Ecobank Nigeria as a Relationship Manager in the Institutional Banking Group for 11 years (1994 – 2005).

5. In January 2005, Yetunde Oni joined Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria, assuming the role of Senior Account Relationship Manager in the Local corporations segment.

6. Transitioning to the Apapa Branch, she took on the dual responsibilities of Wholesale Banking Branch Head and adeptly undertook the origination and development of the Bank’s Local corporate portfolio in the Apapa and Ogun State Region. 

7. The culmination of her achievements led to her appointment as the Head of Local Corporates in May 2010.

8. By 2014, she became Managing Director & Country Head of Commercial Banking in West Africa for Standard Chartered Bank. (2014 – Jan 2021) During her seven-year tenure, Oni played a pioneering role as the head of the Commercial Clients segment. 

9. She crafted and executed the overall strategy for business growth, addressing strategic and tactical issues crucial to the segment’s development.

10. Before her Managerial appointment with Union Bank, she operated as the first female Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer at Standard Chartered Bank in Sierra Leone, a position she took in January 2021.
