A bus traveling from Zimbabwe overturned in South Africa’s northeastern Limpopo province, resulting in the deaths of 10 people and injuries to 35 others, according to a statement released by the local transport ministry on Wednesday.
The accident occurred just before midnight on Tuesday as the bus was en route to Johannesburg. The vehicle lost control after driving over a roundabout at high speed, leading to the tragic overturning. The victims included five men and five women, all reportedly foreign nationals.
Authorities revealed that the driver was new to the job and unfamiliar with the area. The injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
South Africa, despite having one of the most developed road networks in Africa, has a poor road safety record due to factors such as reckless driving and unroadworthy vehicles. Earlier this year, 45 people died in South Africa’s worst road accident of the year when a bus plunged off a bridge into a ravine.
The local government has extended condolences to the families of the deceased and urged motorists to remain vigilant and drive cautiously.
