Sunshine Stars’ long-serving captain, Sunday Abe, has officially retired from professional football after an 18-year career.
The 33-year-old defender made the announcement on Wednesday in Akure, Ondo State, expressing gratitude for the opportunities he had throughout his career.
“After careful consideration, I am announcing my immediate retirement from professional football after nearly two decades of active service,” Abe stated. He highlighted his pride in captaining his boyhood club, Sunshine Stars FC, and also recalled his stint with Teuta Durres FC in Albania.
Abe also reflected on his international experience, representing Nigeria in the U-17 AFCON and World Cup qualifiers, the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt, and eventually earning a call-up to the Super Eagles in 2010.
Looking ahead, Abe revealed his plans to stay involved in football, having already earned two coaching certificates. He expressed his readiness to take on roles in coaching and football management, aiming to contribute to the sport off the field.
Abe’s journey began with the Ondo State Football Development Committee, eventually rising to Sunshine Stars’ first team in the 2006/2007 season. His career includes participation in the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup alongside notable players such as Odion Ighalo and Rabiu Ibrahim. In 2013, Abe was named captain of Sunshine Stars, leading the team for 17 seasons in the Nigeria Premier Football League. His final match was a crucial 1-0 victory over Doma United on June 19, which helped secure Sunshine Stars’ place in the Nigerian top-flight.
