The Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, has described the National Youth Games as a crucial platform for rejuvenating Nigeria’s sports sector.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 8th edition of the Games at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State, Enoh emphasised the importance of grassroots sports development in discovering and nurturing young talent while strengthening Nigeria’s global sports presence.

In his address to a gathering of young athletes and officials from across the nation, the Minister underscored how grassroots sports lay the foundation for creating future champions and fostering national unity. He highlighted the pivotal role the National Youth Games plays in identifying new talent and furthering the country’s sporting ambitions.

“Sports today are vital not only for generating wealth but also for promoting peace, national unity, and international diplomacy,” Enoh said. He added that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) remains committed to repositioning Nigeria’s sports sector in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Drawing from insights gained from preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Enoh urged for a more comprehensive approach to grassroots sports development, one that goes beyond talent identification to ensuring that young athletes are fully nurtured to compete at elite levels.

Enoh also praised the efforts of Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, for his unwavering support in hosting the event, particularly given the challenges of organising such a large-scale competition.

This year’s National Youth Games is set to be historic, with a record-breaking 4,585 athletes and 1,159 officials participating. The Minister extended his gratitude to the Governors of the participating states and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory for their sponsorship and support of the delegations.

As the Games began, Enoh called on the athletes and officials to embody the spirit of fair play, urging them to compete honestly and follow the rules. He noted that this edition marks another important step in shaping the next generation of Olympic and Paralympic champions for Nigeria.
