In response to severe flooding in Maiduguri, Borno State, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has closed the Gomboru drug market, where contaminated medications were washed and sun-dried for resale.

The agency announced the closure on social media, stating that the flooding, caused by the rupture of the Alau dam, led to significant contamination.

The floods have resulted in at least 30 fatalities and displaced over 400,000 residents, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

With water affecting around 40% of the city, officials estimate the number of displaced individuals could rise to one million.

In addition, the flooding has led to the escape of 286 inmates from a local custodial center and significant animal fatalities in the city zoo.
