The Senate has passed the South West Development Commission Bill after its third reading, following the presentation of a report by Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties.
In his statement, Senator Lawan explained that once the commission is established through presidential assent, it will receive funding from the federation account, along with donations from development partners. These funds will be used to address infrastructural deficits and ecological challenges in the South West region.
Initially read for the second time in February 2024, the bill will enable the commission to manage federal funds for capital projects in the region. This includes the construction, reconstruction, and rehabilitation of roads, houses, and other infrastructure.
Additionally, the commission will be tasked with addressing ecological issues and other developmental challenges to accelerate the socioeconomic growth of the South West states.
