The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has made a groundbreaking move by introducing a new contactless biometric capture system designed to transform the passport application process. This advanced technology allows applicants to complete the entire process remotely from their homes or workplaces, using mobile devices.

Speaking at the official launch, the Comptroller General of the NIS highlighted the significance of the innovation. “In line with our commitment to deploy a contactless solution for biometric capture, I am pleased to announce that this vision has become a reality. This new system is a game-changer, and we are excited to implement it within our new passport regime.”

The unveiling event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including government officials, civil society organizations, media professionals, and technology experts. Among the notable attendees were Dr. Joe Abah and representatives from the Nigerian Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), led by Director General Dr. Abike Dabiri, alongside key figures from the tech sector.

The contactless biometric system is expected to enhance efficiency in the passport application process while maintaining national security standards. “Our goal is to align with global best practices, setting a precedent for other nations without compromising our security,” the Comptroller General emphasized.

Initially, the new system will be available to Nigerians in the diaspora, with plans for a broader rollout. “We are making history,” the NIS head remarked, thanking all contributors for their role in the successful development of the project.

Tech expert Dr. Segun Awosanya praised the innovation, stating, “This positions Nigeria at the forefront of digital transformation in public services. It’s a bold step towards achieving global standards.”

As the NIS prepares for full implementation, the agency has pledged to incorporate feedback from stakeholders to ensure a smooth and efficient nationwide rollout in the near future.
