Nigerians have once again been plunged into darkness following the collapse of the national power grid on Tuesday morning, just hours after a previous failure on Monday evening.
Data from the Nigerian System Operator’s portal (niggrid.org) revealed that the grid hit an unprecedented zero megawatts (MW) by 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, despite a brief recovery overnight, when it improved to over 100 MW.
Several electricity distribution companies (DisCos) confirmed the development on their X (formerly Twitter) accounts. Ikeja Electric informed customers of the outage, stating, “Dear Esteemed Customer, please be informed that we experienced another system outage today 15/10/24 @ 09:17hrs affecting supply within our network.” The company assured customers that efforts to restore power were underway in collaboration with key stakeholders.
Eko DisCo also shared a similar message: “Kindly be informed there was a system collapse at 09:17hrs which has resulted in a loss of power supply across our network. We are currently working with our partners for a speedy restoration of the grid.”
As of the time of this report, all 22 generation companies (GenCos) were down, marking the seventh grid collapse in 2024. This ongoing issue continues to add strain to Nigeria’s already troubled power sector.
