Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has officially launched the Lagos Mass Rail Transit (LMRT) Red Line, marking the commencement of commercial operations on the 27-kilometer rail route from Agbado to Oyingbo.

This new line is the second operational rail system in the state in less than two years, following the introduction of the Blue Line in 2022.

At the launch event, Sanwo-Olu stated, “We’re on a mission to keep Lagos moving, and the Red Line is a key part of our vision to create a seamlessly connected city.” The Red Line features eight stations—Oyingbo, Yaba, Mushin, Oshodi, Ikeja, Agege, Iju, and Agbado—and is expected to serve approximately 500,000 passengers daily as train schedules expand.

The Red Line designed to alleviate the city’s notorious traffic congestion, the Red Line offers commuters a faster and more efficient means of transport.

The governor urged Lagosians to protect this vital infrastructure, stating, “This project belongs to all of us. Vandalism or disruptions will not be tolerated—together, we can ensure that our trains remain a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.”

Daily passenger services will begin at 6:00 AM from Agbado, with a second departure at 7:30 AM from Iju. Commuters are required to use the Cowry Card for boarding, ensuring a smooth experience at each station.

The introduction of the Red Line is part of the Lagos State government’s ongoing efforts to enhance the city’s transportation network, providing essential links across key districts and fostering a more connected Lagos.
