National Grid Collapses Again, Plunging Nigerians into Darkness for the Seventh Time in 2024

Millions of Nigerians have been left without electricity as the national grid has collapsed once again, marking the eighth such incident this year.

As of 9:00 AM, all 11 distribution companies across the country reported zero megawatt output, with the national grid currently generating no power—well below the expected 4,800 MW needed to keep the nation running.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has yet to provide an official explanation for this latest failure.

However, TCN’s Independent System Operator (ISO) executive director, Nafisat Ali, previously highlighted the ongoing challenges in the sector during a Senate committee hearing in April. She attributed the repeated grid collapses to deep-rooted issues within the power industry involving multiple stakeholders.

The widespread blackout has affected key regions across the country, including:

Abuja Disco: 0 MW
Benin Disco: 0 MW
Eko Disco: 0 MW
Enugu Disco: 0 MW
Ibadan Disco: 0 MW
Ikeja Disco: 0 MW
Jos Disco: 0 MW
Kaduna Disco: 0 MW
Kano Disco: 0 MW
Port Harcourt Disco: 0 MW
Yola Disco: 0 MW

The nation is waiting for a solution to a recurring crisis that continues to disrupt daily life and cripple economic activities
