The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed reports suggesting the appointment of an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS) within the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Monday by Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, Acting Director of Defence Information, the DHQ clarified that no such position exists.

Gusau confirmed that the current COAS, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, is on a scheduled annual leave and is in good health. The clarification followed rumors circulating about an alleged new appointment. Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam Ibrahim, Chief of Policy and Plans, has been carrying out routine briefings during Lagbaja’s absence, in line with military procedures.

The DHQ urged media outlets to verify information before releasing it to avoid spreading misinformation and warned against advocating for unconstitutional changes in leadership, labeling such actions as treasonable offenses. The military remains committed to protecting Nigeria’s democracy and supporting President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
