The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has initiated an investigation into the recent helicopter accident involving a Sikorsky SK76c, registered as 5N-BQG and operated by Eastwind Aviation, which crashed off the coast of Calabar. This was announced in a statement on Thursday by Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at NSIB.

The investigation, NSIB emphasized, aims not to assign blame but to determine the root causes of the accident and provide recommendations to enhance future aviation safety. “The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced an investigation into the accident involving a Sikorsky SK76c helicopter with registration 5N-BQG, operated by Eastwind Aviation,” the statement read.

The NSIB assured that it remains dedicated to transparency and accountability in its independent investigation process, which is intended to improve transportation safety in Nigeria. As part of the investigation, NSIB is coordinating with relevant agencies, gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing all potential factors involved in the incident.

Expressing condolences to the families affected, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., Director General of the NSIB, stated, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families impacted by this tragic incident. We are fully committed to uncovering the circumstances surrounding this accident. We urge the public to refrain from speculation during this sensitive time, as our focus is on ensuring clarity and accountability.”

The helicopter, which was en route from the Port Harcourt Military Base (DNPM) to the NUIMANTAN oil rig, carried eight people, including six passengers and two crew members, when it crashed on Thursday, October 24, 2024.
