EFL Championship club, Luton Town has issued a strong response following racial abuse directed at Nigeria-eligible striker Elijah Anuoluwapo Adebayo.

Adebayo, who scored ten goals in Luton’s English Premier League campaign last season, could not prevent the club’s relegation to the Championship. This season, the 26-year-old has found it challenging to replicate his Premier League form, netting just once in twelve matches in the Championship.

Recently, Adebayo received racially abusive messages on his social media, an unfortunate recurrence after a similar incident last year during Luton’s Premier League season. In response, Luton Town released a statement condemning the vile messages and warning the perpetrators of the consequences of their actions.

“To the individual who cowardly dropped into Elijah’s DMs: We know who you are, and you know who you are. You’re not a faceless account, like those we’ve reported in recent years,” Luton Town declared. “But if you think you have the courage to say it to his face at Kenilworth Road, we dare you. You’ll face everyone at Luton Town Football Club, standing united with Elijah.”

The club emphasized that any form of abuse is unacceptable and reiterated its commitment to the Premier League’s “No Room for Racism” campaign, which aims to combat racism and educate fans. Last season, Luton Town even shared examples of racist messages with staff to highlight the real-life effects of such behavior.

Adebayo has expressed interest in representing Nigeria’s Super Eagles, though he has yet to receive an official invitation to join the squad.
