Nigeria’s Flamingos journey in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup ended with a hard-fought 2-0 defeat to the United States in the quarterfinal clash on Saturday night in Santiago de los Caballeros.
Coach Bankole Olowookere’s Flamingos, who had shown remarkable skill in the group stages, struggled to break through a determined USA team that capitalized on key defensive lapses.
The Flamingos had breezed through the group stage, winning all three matches against hosts Dominican Republic, New Zealand, and Ecuador, making them one of only three teams to achieve a perfect nine-point record alongside Spain and Korea DPR. However, against a USA side eager for their first title, Nigeria faced a formidable opponent and fought hard but ultimately fell short.
The Flamingos’ first real attempt came in the 9th minute with a long-range effort from Chidi, though it lacked the power to trouble American goalkeeper Evan O’Steen. Nigeria’s standout moment in the first half came when goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma made a critical save in the 28th minute, denying Mary Long’s attempt. However, a penalty conceded by Shakirat Moshood five minutes before halftime allowed Kennedy Fuller to put the USA ahead.
In stoppage time of the first half, Uzoma made two crucial saves to prevent the USA from extending their lead. Nigeria’s best chance to equalize came in the 63rd minute when Taiwo Afolabi outmaneuvered a defender, only for O’Steen to block her shot.
In the 74th minute, Kimmi Ascanio doubled the USA’s lead with a sharp finish, slipping the ball between Uzoma’s legs. Although Uzoma continued to defend her goal valiantly, even blocking a late attempt, the USA nearly scored a third, which was later ruled offside.
The USA advances to the semifinals for the first time since 2008, while Nigeria exits in the quarterfinals, marking the fourth time in seven tournaments the Flamingos have reached this stage.
