Atletico Madrid forward, Rasheedat Ajibade shone brightly as Nigeria’s Super Falcons triumphed 2-0 over Algeria in Ikenne on Saturday afternoon.
Ajibade scored both goals in the first half, showcasing Nigeria’s dominance over the visiting North Africans. The Super Falcons have maintained a perfect winning record against Algeria, having won all three of their previous encounters.
Despite missing key players like Jennifer Echegini, Asisat Oshoala, and Toni Payne, Nigeria displayed impressive determination under new head coach, Justin Madugu, marking the team’s first match since Randy Waldrum’s departure. The lineup featured a blend of experienced international stars and promising homegrown talent, with only five foreign-based players included: goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, defender Tosin Demehin, midfielder Esther Onyenezide, and forwards Gift Monday and Rasheedat Ajibade.
Ajibade made her mark early, scoring in the 24th minute after a dazzling run. She then doubled the lead deep into first-half stoppage time with a stunning long-range effort, thrilling the home crowd at the Remo Stars Stadium.
Although Nigeria couldn’t add to their tally in the second half, they secured a comfortable 2-0 victory, ending a streak of three winless games following losses to Spain, Brazil, and Japan at the Paris Olympic Games.
The Super Falcons and Algeria will meet again for the second leg of this friendly on Tuesday, October 29, at Onikan Stadium in Lagos, as part of Nigeria’s preparations for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
