Ghana’s outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo has drawn criticism on social media after unveiling a statue of himself in the Western Region, meant to commemorate his development achievements during his tenure.
Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, the region’s minister, said that the statue aims to honour the president’s contributions.
However, the installation, located outside the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi, has been labelled as “self-glorification” by many Ghanaians.
Opposition MP Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah criticised the display, saying, “The people of the Western Region deserve better than these self-serving displays.”
While Akufo-Addo claims to have fulfilled 80% of his promises, some citizens question the statue’s significance, especially given incomplete projects. An X user commented, “It would be admirable if the president had allowed posterity to recognise and appreciate his work.”
Calls are growing for the statue’s removal once Akufo-Addo steps down in January after two terms.
