The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has encouraged travelers to report reckless driving to help reduce road accidents during the 2024 ember months. This call to action concludes the FRSC’s national ember month sensitization campaign, themed “Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes Kill More Passengers Than Drivers.”

The Plateau State Command launched its campaign on November 6, 2024, in Jos. Speaking at the event, Plateau FRSC Sector Commander Maxwell Plateau highlighted the importance of driver responsibility and passenger advocacy for road safety. He urged passengers to speak up if drivers violate road rules, stressing that safe travel is everyone’s right and responsibility.

“We must appreciate the selfless work of the transport sector in ensuring the safe movement of people, goods, and services. However, we all have a role to play in maximizing safety,” said Commander Plateau. He assured that the FRSC will increase visibility, provide prompt rescue responses, and enhance traffic enforcement measures during this critical period. He emphasized that by reporting reckless driving and following road safety guidelines, travelers can actively contribute to a safer journey.

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, represented by Commissioner for Youths and Sports Noel Nkup, praised the FRSC for its efforts to reduce road accidents and clear obstructions, acknowledging the difficulties faced by commuters due to road conditions. The governor assured residents that road improvements are underway to enhance travel safety across the state.

Yakubu Dalyop, state chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), pledged the union’s support for road safety initiatives. He announced measures including setting up a task force to inspect vehicles at departure points, ensure proper tire conditions, prevent overloading, and complete passenger manifests, all aimed at improving travel safety during the busy ember months.
