Libya and UK Strengthen Security Cooperation, Focus on Police Training and Regional Stability

Libya’s Minister of Interior, Imad Al-Tarabulsi, met with British Ambassador Martin Longden in Tripoli on Sunday to discuss enhanced security cooperation and training programs for Libyan police forces. The meeting, attended by Maj. Gen. Abdul Wahid Abdul Samad, Director of the Minister’s Office, and the Minister’s Advisor, focused on strengthening Libya’s security capabilities and tackling shared security challenges.

In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the Ministry of Interior highlighted key points of the discussion, including collaboration to address illegal immigration and strategies to stem the flow of migrants across the Mediterranean. The discussions emphasized the importance of boosting Libyan police training and professional development, aligning their skills with international standards to improve security efforts in Tripoli and across the country.

Both sides also explored areas of mutual security interest, such as combating terrorism, organized crime, and arms smuggling. Intelligence sharing was a focal point, with both parties agreeing that cooperation in this area is crucial for countering security threats effectively.

Ambassador Longden described the meeting as productive, noting on his X account that discussions addressed security challenges in Tripoli and underscored the importance of safeguarding the rights and freedoms of Libyan citizens.

The meeting concluded with both parties emphasizing the importance of ongoing coordination and knowledge exchange to bolster stability in Libya and the broader region. They expressed mutual commitment to advancing joint security efforts, aiming for outcomes that serve both nations’ interests and promote long-term regional security and stability.
