The Lagos State Government has demolished shanties located along the canal bank in Ajao Estate, where occupants reportedly paid up to ₦100,000 in annual rent.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement shared on X.com on Friday.

Wahab stated, “As part of ongoing efforts to curb environmental violations and illegal occupation of public spaces, the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), commonly known as KAI, demolished 138 shanties on Thursday around the Ajao Estate Canal. These structures were rented out to illegal occupants for amounts ranging from ₦60,000 to ₦100,000 per year.”

In May, Wahab revealed a similar discovery under the Dolphin Estate Bridge in Ikoyi, where tenants paid ₦250,000 annually for makeshift rooms. That structure included 86 partitioned rooms measuring approximately 10×10 and 12×10 feet.

The demolition underscores the government’s commitment to tackling illegal encroachments and improving environmental safety across Lagos.
