Ivory Coast coach, Jean-Louis Gasset, has been sacked after the team’s poor performance the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

This was confirmed by the country’s football federation (FIF) on Wednesday.

“The contracts of coach Jean-Louis Gasset and his assistant Ghislain Printant are terminated due to insufficient results,” the FIF said in a statement.

Gasset, at the age of 70, assumed leadership of the team in 2022 after replacing Patrice Beaumelle. Previously serving as the assistant coach for the France men’s national team and Paris Saint-Germain, the Frenchman brought his expertise to Ivory Coast.

In their AFCON debut, Ivory Coast secured a triumphant 2-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau on January 13, with Seko Fofana and Jean-Philippe Krasso netting the crucial goals. Despite this success, subsequent setbacks, including a 1-0 loss to Nigeria on January 18 and a damaging 4-0 defeat to Equatorial Guinea on January 21, have put their tournament fate beyond their control.

The team’s future in the competition hinges on factors outside their influence. If they manage to qualify, their next challenge awaits against the Group B winners Cape Verde or the victor of Group C in the round of 16.
