Prominent Nigerian lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, has arrived at the Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti following his controversial arrest last week.
The arrest stemmed from alleged defamatory claims in his newly-published book against respected Ekiti elder statesman and legal icon, Afe Babalola.
Farotimi’s detention has sparked widespread criticism, with notable human rights activist Omoyele Sowore calling for a nationwide protest to demand his release.
On Monday December 9, Farotimi was granted a N50 Million bail, a development that sparked nationwide reactions.
AAN TV had earlier reported heightened security presence at Afe Babalola’s law firm in Lagos, an unusual development coinciding with the escalating tensions surrounding the case.
The trial is expected to draw significant attention as the court hears arguments over the alleged defamation charges and Farotimi’s controversial detention.
Human rights groups and supporters of the embattled lawyer have vowed to intensify their calls for justice.
