The United States and the United Nations have both congratulated Ghanaians for the peaceful conduct of the general elections held last Saturday.
In a statement issued by U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, the U.S. commended President-elect John Dramani Mahama for his successful election campaign, following the official declaration of results by the Electoral Commission (EC). The U.S. also extended congratulations to Vice-President-elect, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, on becoming Ghana’s first female vice president.
The statement also praised Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia for his gracious acceptance of the election results, noting that such acts of political maturity demonstrate Ghana’s commitment to democratic values.
Furthermore, the U.S. commended the Electoral Commission, poll workers, civil society organizations, and security personnel for their efforts in ensuring a peaceful and transparent electoral process. While acknowledging reports of isolated incidents of violence and at least four confirmed deaths, the U.S. expressed condolences to the families of the victims and called for a full investigation and accountability.
“We are proud of our enduring partnership and friendship with the people and government of Ghana. We look forward to working closely with President-elect Mahama to continue our historic relationship,” the statement added.
Similarly, the United Nations, through its Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, Leonardo Santos Simão, sent a message praising the peaceful and orderly elections. He lauded the responsibility demonstrated by all stakeholders and the commitment of political leaders to ensuring peace and security throughout the electoral process.
“The Special Representative commends Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his exemplary and gracious concession and calls on Ghanaians to unite behind President-elect Mahama as Ghana continues to serve as an inspiration for democracy across Africa,” Simão stated.
